Steroid ointment for eczema and dermatitis (betamethasone valerate)
White to pale yellow ointment 10 g
Eczema, dermatitis, prickly heat, contact dermatitis, itching, chilblains, insect bites, and hives
Active Ingredients (per 1 g)
Betamethasone valerate (adrenocortical hormone) 1.2 mg
Inactive Ingredients
Liquid paraffin, white petrolatum
Instructions for Use
- ✓Apply an appropriate amount to the affected area 1 to several times a day.
- ✓Follow the prescribed dosage and method strictly.
- ✓How much to use: the amount squeezed onto an adult index finger from the tip to the first joint (about 0.5 g) covers an area the size of two palms. Adjust the amount to the size of the affected area.
- ✓Place the ointment on the affected area and spread it gently over the whole area without rubbing it in. The surface should feel slightly tacky.
- ✓Children should use this product under adult supervision.
- ✓Be careful not to get the ointment in your eyes. If it does get in your eyes, rinse immediately with water or lukewarm water. If the symptoms are severe, see an eye doctor.
- ✓For external use only — do not ingest.
- ✕Do not cover the treated area with anything airtight, such as plastic wrap. When using it on an area covered by a diaper, do not put on a tight-fitting diaper or plastic-backed pants.
- ✕Do not use it as a makeup base or after shaving.
- ✕Do not use this product if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this product or any of its ingredients.
- ✕Do not use on the following areas:
- (1) Chickenpox, athlete's foot, ringworm, or areas that are festering
- (2) The eyes or the area around the eyes
- ✕Do not use over a wide area of the face.
- ✕Do not use continuously over a long period.
- ✓Once your symptoms have improved, do not keep applying this product out of habit.
- ✓Using large amounts of this ointment, or using it over a long period, can thin the skin or dilate the blood vessels in the skin as a side effect. The skin on the face is thin, so take particular care there.
- ⚠Consult a doctor, pharmacist, or registered salesperson before use if you:
- (1) Are under medical treatment.
- (2) Are pregnant or possibly pregnant.
- (3) Have ever had an allergic reaction to a medicine.
- (4) Have a widespread affected area.
- (5) Have severe weeping or raw, broken skin.
- ✓Stop use immediately and consult a doctor, pharmacist, or registered salesperson — bringing this package insert with you — if any of the following symptoms appear after use, as they may be side effects:
- Skin: Rash, redness, or itching
- Skin (affected area): Fungal infection such as athlete's foot or ringworm, acne, signs of infection, persistent irritation, or whitening of the skin
- ✓Stop use and consult a doctor, pharmacist, or registered salesperson — bringing this package insert with you — if symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse, after 5–6 days of use.
- ✓Store tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Do not transfer to another container (this can cause mistaken use or affect quality). Do not use after the expiry date.
Additional Information
Betamethasone valerate is one of the adrenocortical hormones. It reduces inflammation and relieves itching.
When a topical steroid is used correctly — in terms of how long and how much you apply — side effects are not common. With long-term continuous use, the skin may turn white or become thin. Using it on an area with an infection such as athlete's foot can make the symptoms worse. Using it around the eyes over a long period can raise the pressure inside the eye, so stop using it there.
